The highest-ranking official in Idyllwild in California runs his town from the back of a pick-up truck - and he just happens to be a dog.

Golden retriever, Mayor Max, has proven he has a nose for politics, after winning three consecutive elections in the picturesque town of Idyllwild.

The goldie, whose full name is Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II, has been mayor since 2013. He’s actually the second dog to be elected, after Idyllwild first elected a canine, Mayor Max I, in 2012.

Mayor Max II can often be found at local events and festivals, with a wagging tail and striped tie, alongside his two deputies Mikey and Mitzi.

Max solemnly swears on his “food bowl” to faithfully execute his duties as Mayor of Idyllwild, and promises to “support commissioners in their projects” and “strive to be present at community events”.

The small town of Idyllwild in Southern California has a population of 2,500 and doesn’t have a local government – so, it has never had a human mayor.

In 2012, Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends (ARF) sponsored the town’s first ever mayoral election, and encouraged constituents to cast their votes on their pets via a charity donation.

Golden retriever Max won two-thirds of the vote, and became the town’s first ever mayor.

But sadly, the elderly dog passed away within two years.

Max’s owner and chief of staff, Phyllis Mueller, launched an international search for a successor, and soon fell in love with two sets of golden retriever litters in the States – who happened to be part of Max’s bloodline.

Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II arrived in Idyllwild in June, 2013, and ARF approved his mayoral transition plan at just 11 weeks old.

In his third election, Mayor Max II was appointed mayor for life.

Now, Mayor Max II and his two golden retriever deputies, Mikey and Mitzi, continue to serve the town with wagging tails, lolling tongues and striped ties.

The trio are often referred to as “the Mayors of Idyllwild” and regularly make appearances at festivals, fairs and even make house calls to those in need.

Mayor Max II has a fleet of mayor mobiles with custom license plates and logos, a line of clothing merchandise and magnetic business cards that can be found on the locals’ fridges.

The goldie has 62,000 followers on Instagram and regularly posts pictures and videos of his daily activities.

Max has been photographed at weddings, schools and parades, and has met many celebrities.

A statement of Oath on Mayor Max’s website reads: “I, Max, do swear on my food bowl to faithfully execute my duties as Mayor of Idyllwild.

“I am proud to take this oath, knowing that my human campaign manager went above and beyond to finance this election campaign.

“Just as it is in Chicago and all of New Jersey, I am proud that also in Idyllwild money can, to contradict the Beatles, buy me both love and public office.

“I will be a role model as Mayor for all canines, felines and humines, so help me ARF!”

Mayor Max promises to “support commissioners in their projects” and “strive to be present at community events such as outdoor concerts, festivals, fairs, and the July 4 parade.”
