Keeping your dog hydrated in summer can be a challenge, but it’s vital to their health and happiness.

In the hot weather, dogs need three to four times their usual water intake (depending on their size and activity levels) in order to prevent dehydrating.

This July is Pet Hydration Month - yep, it’s a real thing - to raise awareness of the signs of dehydration, including this super simple test, and the dangers that come with your dogs not staying hydrated.

Furr Boost has launched their rehydrating doggy drink designed to top up your dogs daily water intake to mark the awareness month.

The junk-free drink comes in three meaty flavours your dog will go barking mad for, including:

  • Beef, broccoli and blueberry
  • Chicken, butternut squash and cranberry
  • Pork, sweet potato and apple.

The wellbeing drink was created by Louise Toal for her dog, Phoebe, as she wanted to ensure she was giving her pup the very best products made using only natural ingredients. Using her experience gained from 20 years working as a Technical Manager in food safety and quality assurance in the drinks industry, Louise developed Furr Boost as a refreshing complement to water.

My Phoebe, and her brother, Frank, were very excited to try out the product, which is packed full of superfoods, vitamins and added oils from salmon, flaxseed and coconut.

First things first, the packaging is absolutely adorable, and reminds me of the little milk cartons you used to get in primary school - how nostalgic - if only dogs could sip through a straw! The Tetra Pak cartons have been designed so that they’re easy to transport, serve and recycle, whilst keeping the product fresh.

There are so many ways that Furr Boost can be used, and it’s compact size means you can even use it on the go if you’ve gotten out on a walk early to beat the heat! The brand recommends pouring it over food, or even freezing it onto a LickiMat as a refreshing mentally-stimulating treat.

I let Phoebe and Frank pick their flavour of the day, and they opted for the beef, broccoli and blueberry Furr Boost to top their breakfast. We added it to their food, which included a mixture of kibble, wet meat, Omega EFA oil and a probiotic.

For dogs of Phoebe and Frank’s weight, they should ideally drink 200ml (or one carton) a day, so we poured half a carton each over their breakfast so they could try another flavour at tea time.

When it’s warm, Phoebe often refuses her breakfast and deems the weather too hot to eat (we’ve all been there), but the smell of the Furr Boost must have been too good to refuse, because she was the first one in the kitchen to wolf it down. Frank also licked his bowl clean and looked around the kitchen for more!

As well as providing a natural, junk-free compliment to a dog’s daily water intake, Furr Boost can aid a range of concerns including anxiety, digestion, immunity, hydration, and can help to support a healthy metabolism and skin and coat.

Founder Louise commented: “We only want the very best for our pets and we will do everything we can to give them long and happy lives. That’s why I set out to find only the best and most nutritional products for Phoebe and in the end developed one of my own!

“It was important to me to ensure that Furr Boost is made using only natural ingredients, and that it is packed full of all the things dogs need to be healthy, happy and hydrated. Many dogs don’t drink enough water, so Furr Boost provides a way to hydrate them while supporting their general wellbeing, all while they enjoy a delicious treat!”

Here are Louise’s top tips for keeping your dog hydrated in summer:

Provide more water bowls

Placing plenty of water bowls around the house and garden is one of the easiest ways to encourage your four-legged friend to drink more. By simply making water available in every room your dog won’t have to go far for a drink, so even the laziest of pooches will be tempted to take a sip.

Choose an area free from distractions with little human traffic and consider placement of the bowl - senior or injured pooches might prefer their bowls elevated to avoid having to bend to take a drink.

Tempt them with tasty treats

Just like us humans, dogs can get bored of drinking plain water, too! Adding flavoured water or liquid treats to your dog’s diet is a great way to get them to drink more.

Try infusing water with low sodium chicken stock or dog-safe fruit, like blueberries, cucumber or oranges – just be sure to remove them from the water before serving to avoid a choking hazard!

For a real treat with added health benefits, try a dog hydration drink like Furr Boost, made from 100% natural, human grade ingredients and packed with superfoods, vitamins and added oils from salmon, flaxseed and coconut.

Get creative with refreshing fun

You can’t beat cooling down with a tasty ice lolly or ice cream on a hot summer’s day, and your dog feels the same! Pupsicles make the paw-fect refreshing treat, especially during the summer months, and they’re really easy to make.

Simply take any mould - an ice cube tray, Kong or lick mat is perfect – pour on your pooches favourite Furr Boost drink or some flavoured water, freeze, and serve. Not only will a pupsicle provide hydration on a hot day, it’s also a great form of enrichment and will keep your four-legged friend entertained.

Don’t forget drinks to go

Even on short walks during the summer months, hydration while on the move is essential. Never leave home without a fresh water supply and drinking vessel - a collapsible water bowl or bowls with bottles attached are great options for providing fluids when you’re out and about.

Ensure you make regular pit stops to offer your fur baby a quick drink – little and often is better than one big drink, or it may come straight back up! It goes without saying, don’t allow your dog to drink from stagnant water like puddles or ponds, as it may contain all kinds of hidden nasties and harmful bacteria or chemicals.

Furr Boost is available to buy online in multipacks which contain eight 200ml cartons of each flavour for £15.75 Alternatively new customers might like to try the introduction taster pack which includes one 200ml carton of each flavour for £5.99. All orders over £25 are delivered free of charge.
