The most popular names for lockdown dogs

We saw more people than ever adopt their own doggo in lockdown

Lockdown saw a swell of people looking for a four-legged friend of their own.

Being stuck inside led a lot of us to go in search of some more company away from our usual human friends.

Demand grew and grew for dogs across the last year, with some breeds seeing their value rise by as much as £2,000 because so many people were looking for one.

And with the influx of new furry friends into our lives comes a big question for all of us - what are you going to name them?

It seems that plenty of us were of a mind when it came to the best name for our beloved pooches during lockdown, as some titles stood out as particularly popular.

Research into lockdown pet trends from GoCompare has uncovered the most popular names for our new friends given during lockdown.

It turns out that, since we went into lockdown, the most popular name chosen for our dogs is Luna, with over 1,700 pooches being given the name.

Bella was the second-most popular name in the last year, with just shy of 1,500 dogs bearing the name.

Milo rounds out the top three, with Teddy and Buddy completing the top five.

The presence of classic names like Charlie and Coco on the list also prove that the old favourites are still resonating with dog owners to this day.

The top ten most popular dog names throughout lockdown are:

  1. Luna - 1,753
  2. Bella - 1,492
  3. Milo - 1,352
  4. Teddy - 1,067
  5. Buddy - 1,020
  6. Lola - 946
  7. Coco - 887
  8. Bailey - 858
  9. Reggie - 779
  10. Charlie - 775

Despite not proving most popular over lockdown, the GoCompare research has found that the most popular dog name since 1989 was in fact Bella, with well over 6,000 doggos bearing the name in the UK in that time.

Luna was the third-most popular name overall after its popularity over lockdown, with Charlie proving the second-most chosen name over the three decades.
